Pulling Out the Bright Whites

Hello!

Sorry I haven’t updated in the past few days. My boyfriend and I went on a trip to Vermont. It’s so beautiful up there, and of course it’s so nice to get away from the chaos that is New York City!

Anyways...

In this stage I have pulled forward all the lights in Mason’s face. It may appear that his face has gotten wider, it’s funny how your eyes play tricks with darks and lights! In reality, it’s exactly the same size that I started with and will go back to look the proportional size again once I glaze in the darks again.

I feel that all of these layers are essential in making the final product have a depth that captures realism.

Starting to Glaze!

Hi everyone!

I thought I’d brighten up some of the whites especially in Mason’s face. This layer of glazed on whites will help give the fur it’s fluffy appearance in the final piece. Still have a ways to go though!

Pushing and pulling the darks and lights

Hi everyone! I did some work on Mason’s portrait this past weekend. I started to pull out some of the lights and push back some of the darks. This stage is really important because it’s what really starts to give the painting it’s depth.

Getting Started on the Underpainting!

Hi everyone,

Here is a snapshot I took of the very preliminary stages of Mason’s portrait. I’m using an old master’s technique of an underpainting. Basically it’s main focus is to lay out the structure of the painting. I will need to let this layer completely dry before I really start to flesh the rest of the painting out.

Congrats to Mason and Kathryn Pullam!!!

Congrats to Kathryn Pullam and her winning entry “Mason, Lap of Luxury” in the River City Westies’ 2nd Annual Westies Photo Contest!!!

Earlier this year I was contacted by Teresa from River City Westies about contributing to their photo contest, she had gotten my name from Three Dog Bakery in Richmond, VA. Of course I accepted, anything that I can do to help!!!

There were many great submissions and River City Westies raised a lot of funds to help Westies in need.

I personally LOVE this picture of Mason, the lighting is absolutely beautiful and I can’t wait to get started!!!

Check out the next posting to see how the beginning stages of the painting are coming along!
